The Benefits Of Dog Obedience Training- Why should I train my dog?

October 22nd, 2010
Comments Off

Dog obedience training  is the very best thing you can do for your relationship with your dog.

Here are some points to consider:

  • Basic obedience training makes life simple to your dog and cuts down on confusion. By learning from you the handler/guardian (owner),  your dog will know her place in the world and understand right from wrong.  Remember, for dogs there are no gray areas. They see the world in black and white terms and your dog will appreciate you showing “our mostly gray world” in  black and white to her.
  • Training your dog when done properly is fun and rewarding for both of you.
  • When your dog is trained you will  have a happy, obedient and balanced dog that you can take anywhere with you. Not to mention when you know your dog will come back to you when called  you can provide greater freedom to your dog. Leash is a human invention to Restrain dogs, but trained dogs don’t need leashes.
  • Obedience trained puppy or dog is a safe dog .
  • By training your dog you gain trust and respect  with your dog. She will understand what is expected of her and knows that you will always be fair and consistent with this.
  • When your dog is trained she will be just as great when you have friends/kids around.
  • If your dog is unruly you are less likely to exercise your dog. So training your dog will fulfill some vital needs for your dog:  Exercise, mental stimulation, spending time with you and providing her with a “job”.
  • Dog training will reduce the time your dog spends away from you locked up in a crate because you (you and your dog) is struggling over dominance. You’ll be the always fair guardian , who she’ll respect and look to for guidance.

We view dog training as a process which we build upon over time.  Not only that but this process will build your (you and your dog)  confidence along the way.

If we can help you with your dog training needs please let us know.

Halloween Safety for dogs

October 22nd, 2010

Unless your dog has the energy of a puppy, the calmness of a Zen master, and the endurance of the Energizer bunny, odds are  the Halloween craziness will stress our dogs out.

In addition to the stress brought on by noise and commotion, there are other concerns to keep an eye on.  With this in mind, here are a series of tips to keep  your dog safe.

Avoid chocolate and other candy.

Make sure to keep any candy that you are going to hand out safely hidden from your dog. Notify kids in the house to put their candy bags away. Chocolate is a big no-no for dogs as it contains theobromine, which their bodies cannot properly digest. The darker the chocolate, the worse it can be. Small amounts are typically not lethal, so if he does snag a bite don’t freak out. But also don’t let it happen.

Candy wrappers, tinfoil, and other dangers can be found in candy bags, so keep your dog safe by putting these away.

Put your dog in a safe place.

Either a separate room or a crate, when the trick-or-treaters are coming by. Unless your dog has a strong obedience on “Place” command you should not let your dog be at the door to greet the kids. Costumes, commotion, and loud noises will stress any dog out and can cause problems ranging from stress to aggression.

Don’t leave your dog around kids without supervision.

The erratic movements and loud, startling noises can really upset him. Add in a scary costume and you have a formula for disaster.

Be careful about placement of electrical cords for decorations.

If your puppy or dog chews on these, trouble will follow. Arrange them for safety and use a bitter apple spray on the cord to keep pets at bay.

Don’t leave candles unattended.

Carved pumpkins look great with a candle burning inside them, but they can be tipped over. They can also be investigated by curious pets which can lead to burns or worse.

Have a safe Halloween.

Casey, Jon & Tink

TinkAlmost instantly our stubborn (but cute!) boxer, Tink, made drastic improvements. We went from being terrified that she would get run over by a car every time she “escaped” from the house to being able to walk our dog off leash!!
Turk and his team are truly amazing dog trainers and really fun to work with! Tink used to jump on everyone that visited our house.
Most importantly, we have been trained to be good dog owners and effective pack leaders in the process as well. We have learned how to handle our highly energetic, crazy (in a good way!) dog…if any one has a boxer, you know what I am talking about!
As a result, our house is a much calmer, happier place now. In addition, through Off Leash Dog Training in Charlotte we have had the opportunity to continue training Tink with group lessons. These dog training group lessons are extremely helpful, and it is great to meet with other dog loving people in Charlotte who may be having the same issues. Just the other week, Tink sat on a place board while 20 or more dogs were loose all around her. I have NEVER seen her so calm and never thought that would have been possible!
So, for anyone who has a dog that needshelp, give Turk and his team a call. They will not let you down, and you will wonder why you didn’t call sooner!
To Turk, Greg, and Erin, we cannot thank you all enough for all you have done for us!
You guys rock! Thanks!

The Charnes & ginger

GInger-Unleashed.jpgGinger has been transformed from being the Object d’Alpha in this household to having more freedom than ever because of the amazing work you did with her during her two week stay with you and Jill, 7, Djembe and Zilli.

As you know, Vizslas are a special breed. Ginger is sweet, gentle, loyal, driven, focused, highly intelligent and likes to be in charge. And she was! Now she is even sweeter, equally as gentle, loyal beyond words, driven, very focused and I’m in charge. And it’s easy! Life in our place is stress free and full of doggie love.
As you may remember, I parked my car at Frazier Park just in front of your truck with 7 inside, along with a client’s Boxer. Ginger pulled me across the grass to see you, to lick your face and say hello. When you came over to evaluate Ginger you noticed my copy of the Alchemist and told me you read it once a year. It was at that moment I understood what kind of a person you are, and I asked if you believed in Karma.
You understand dogs, and you understand people. You get it that good things come to good people. I’m so impressed with your abilities to calm a worried, frustrated owner as well as to calm a frustrated and confused puppy.
When I take her to the park now she loves to show everyone how well she behaves, how she can not only jump on the picnic table, but over it as well and leaps over the puddles of muddy water with many dogs in hot pursuit! People ask about her training, they know who you are…”Is he nice…was he kind to Ginger”?
My response is always “Turk is the best guy, period”.

The Magees & riley

Riley-Unleashed.jpgThank you so much for “showing us the light.” In the few short weeks you spent with us and Riley it was amazing watching her transform from Mrs. Hyde to Dr. Jekyll.

Before meeting you our dog was a mess: an uncontrolled, hyperactive, head-of-the-house, on top of the world 1 _ year old Weim. Running her 2 miles a day and taking her on multiple walks was just not enough to calm her down and get her to act the way we always envisioned the perfect dog to act.
From jumping on and “attacking” any visitors with excitement to dragging my poor wife to the ground during walks, our dog was terrible. When taking her into any pet store in Charlotte, Riley would constantly jump on us, other customers and knock everything over in excitement. The final straw was getting a call from Emily one morning after Riley had once again had her way with her during their walk, dragging her for miles and not responding to any type of command, we decided it was time for professional dog training.
Now, we have honestly had people comment when passing by about how they wish their dog could be as calm and obedient as ours.
Riley now controls her excitement when meeting new people and has not jumped on anyone since the first lesson. We no longer have to walk her on a leash and she can now play freely, unleashed, and responds to any of our commands no matter what the distraction maybe. It’s a great feeling and a true testament to the job you have done in working with us.With your help, the quality of all our lives has been improved. We cannot say thank you enough and are truly grateful to now have such a well behaved dog.
Thanks Turk!
