Almost every one of our clients listed “Pulling on a leash while walking” as one of their dog’s problem behaviors before starting with our dog training program.

Leash pulling issues can range anywhere from your dog slightly pulling on the leash during part of the walk to your dog outright dragging you for the entire walk.  Yes, it is true that your dog dragging you is annoying, frustrating, and often embarrassing, but the real problem with your dog pulling on the leash is SAFETY.

We’ve had clients, that before they joined Off Leash Dog Training, their dog pulled on the leash so much that their owner ended up with a shoulder injury requiring surgery. (See Video of a client from Charlotte NC) As well as stories of owners being dragged by their dog to the point of slipping and falling, resulting in sometimes seriously injured hands, knees and ankles.

Pulling on the leash also causes problems for your dog.  One of the biggest problems when your dog is pulling on the leash is the much needed walks your dog needs becomes less and less frequent because of your frustration with the walking process.  Resulting in your dog not getting enough exercise  which of course causes an even worse behaving dog. With our Train as You Live™ philosophy, we don’t want your dog being left behind at home when your family is out having fun and being denied the opportunity to be a part of the family.

Another challenge with your dog pulling on the leash is that you’re less likely to have control of your dogs actions with oncoming cars or other dogs that could  be aggressive. If your dog is darting out and taking control of the walk with or without you, this can cause bigger problems than just being frustrated with your not so relaxing walk.

A Dog that is pulling on the leash is demonstrating:

1) the Dog does not understand the leash pressure

2) the Dog does not see the human as the leader of the pack

3) the Human’s role in their relationship is seen as “Restricting the Dog”

Although you will not need a leash once your dog graduates from the Off Leash Dog Training program,  most communities have leash laws regardless of the obedience level of dogs, so we do teach loose leash walking, along with our complete off leash obedience in our training programs.
