Our dogs are family™ is the cornerstone of Off Leash Dog Training philosophy. But what does it mean and how is it applied to our off leash dog training programs?
As it’s outlined in our dog training philosophy we view safety of our dogs as the primary purpose for dog training.
In Our dogs are family concept we want the sponsoring thought of our communication as between family members rather than boss and employee.
Following analogies will clarify the key concepts: Imagine when you were about 1-2 years old. Pretty much moving about clueless to all the dangers around you, just crawling/walking exploring your world. Trying to sick hair pins in to electrical outlets, trying to drink Drano from under the sink….. Meanwhile your parents trying very hard to keep you alive. Baby proofing the house, restricting you to your play pen etc. Although techinicaly what parents are doing are limitations on the child, or may even be seen as restrictions, no one would argue what parents are attempting is wrong. This is how we explain the role of our humans in our dog training system. Humans are safety from dangers.
Next analogy is about the human being in charge:
Now imagine you are a parent of a child with flu who is coughing terribly all night, but does not like the taste of cough medicine. As a parent you have 2 options: 1) Let your child cough up a lung 2) Make your child take the medicine. From the child perspective this may be a mean act, but from much wiser perspective of parent nothing could be farther from the truth.
So in our training although our dogs would much prefer to chase that squirell next to a busy street, we the human have to help our dogs do the right thing. Not because We said so, but because we know the rules of the human world a lot better than our dogs.
